Can you require a medical certificate for sick leave taken on Mondays, Fridays, or around public holidays?
May I insist on a medical certificate if an employee has been absent on a Monday, Friday, or before and after a public holiday?
So-called “Monday sickness” is a common phenomenon in the workplace.
Normally an employer who has a good relationship with employees would not require an employee to produce a medical certificate for one or two days of absence.
So, the question is this: May you – for example – insist that an employee who is absent on a Monday produces a valid medical certificate?
The answer is “Yes”, but we would recommend that you include such a provision in a workplace policy.
